ISUMATAQ - THE DREAM THE REALITY
Painting and Project Vision by Ken Kirkby Music by Pat Canavan and Gary Lalonde

Isumataq is an Inuit word that means "in the presence of which wisdom may show itself" Isumataq is also the name of painter Ken Kirkby's massive oil-on-canvas that stands 12 feet tall and 152 feet long!

The Story in Brief

Painter Ken Kirkby traveled the Canadian Arctic for 5 years and was befriended by many Inuit. His passion drove him to create "The World's Largest Portrait" of Mother Earth. The Mission of the project is to raise awareness of the the vastness of Canada and its fragile environment as well as the process of creative thiking in the arts. It bacame a great blend of entertainment and education.

In 1990 Pat met Ken and used Kirkby's painting "Out of the Mist" with his band U4EA on their single and video Mystery. Soon after, Pat and Ken began working together on the concepts that would become a Rock album that explores some Inuit folklore and mythology along with an in-depth look at man in his environment.

This 10 song album was written by Patrick Canavan with Gary Lalonde (formerly of Honeymoon Suite) along with input from Kirkby. Recorded over a two-year period, each session saw THE TUNDRA working in totally different environments with many different people. "Gary and I had worked together on a music project for the Boys & Girls Club here in Toronto," says Pat, "then we began to work the ideas that were coming from books that both of us were reading at the time. Gary read me the story of how the Moon first started to chase the Sun and the next thing we knew an entire song came from that."

Isumataq Touring Project included Kirby's massive painting that was officially unveiled in Canadian Parliament ( 4 panels and the model to be exact the real painting wouldn't fit ) We then toured New York World Art Expo - Jacob Javits Center, Ottawa - Museum of Natural History, Toronto - Ontario Place in the Isumataq multi media Pavilion. Canavan's Songs of the Earth in it's original 23 minute form set the mood and atmosphere of the exhibits.
